ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Understanding Your Child's Growth

The Growth Hormone Stimulation Test is a specialized diagnostic test used to evaluate the body’s ability to produce growth hormone. Growth hormone plays a crucial role in a child’s physical growth, bone development, and metabolism.

Under the care of Dr. Smita Ramachandran, this test is used to assess children and adolescents with concerns related to short stature, poor growth velocity, or delayed physical development.

When Is Evaluation or Testing Needed?

Because growth hormone is released in pulses throughout the day and night, a single routine blood test cannot accurately assess whether a child produces sufficient growth hormone. A stimulation test uses safe, standardized medications to stimulate pituitary release of growth hormone, measured at timed intervals.

Testing is indicated when:
  • Height velocity has slowed significantly below 4–5 cm per year.
  • Child is substantially shorter than expected for age and family target height.
  • Bone age X-rays show substantial developmental delay.
  • Hypothalamic or pituitary conditions are being investigated.

Early Attention Makes a Difference

Identifying growth concerns early allows for timely intervention and better long-term outcomes.

Healthy growth builds a stronger tomorrow.

What Does the Evaluation Involve?

The test is performed in a comfortable, child-friendly day-care setting under close pediatric endocrine supervision:
  • Fasting Preparation: The child arrives in the morning after overnight fasting.
  • Gentle IV Cannulation: A tiny intravenous line is placed with numbing cream so repeated blood samples can be drawn painlessly without repeated needle pricks.
  • Standard Stimulating Agents: Proven medications (such as Clonidine, Glucagon, or Arginine) are administered.
  • Timed Blood Sampling: Samples are collected at set intervals (e.g., 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes) to measure peak hormone levels.
  • Safety & Comfort: Blood pressure and glucose are continuously monitored by trained nursing staff, and a snack is provided upon completion.
