ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Understanding Your Child's Growth

The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is a key diagnostic procedure that evaluates how efficiently a child’s body clears sugar from the bloodstream over time.

Under the clinical care of Dr. Smita Ramachandran, this test provides essential clarity in diagnosing prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD), and insulin resistance in children and adolescents.

When Is Evaluation or Testing Needed?

Standard fasting glucose tests do not always reveal early metabolic changes. An OGTT stresses the metabolic system with a controlled carbohydrate load to uncover subtle glycemic regulation problems.

Recommended for:
  • Overweight or obese children with clinical signs of insulin resistance (e.g., acanthosis nigricans).
  • Children with a strong family history of early-onset Type 2 diabetes.
  • Adolescents with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
  • Annual screening for children with Cystic Fibrosis.

Early Attention Makes a Difference

Early diagnosis through OGTT enables targeted lifestyle and medical interventions.

Proactive metabolic detection prevents future cardiometabolic risks.

What Does the Evaluation Involve?

The OGTT is administered in a calm, supportive clinic setting:
  • Fasting Baseline: A baseline fasting blood sample is drawn in the morning.
  • Flavored Glucose Drink: The child drinks a precisely measured, child-appropriate glucose drink (1.75 g per kg body weight, max 75 g) within 5 minutes.
  • Rest & Timed Draws: Blood samples are drawn at 1 hour and 2 hours while the child rests, reads, or watches a video.
  • Expert Interpretation: Results are evaluated against pediatric clinical cutoff standards.
