Adrenal & Pituitary Disorders

The adrenal glands in the body produce three important steroids -cortisol, aldosterone and adrenal androgens, which regulate several functions from birth till adulthood. The pituitary gland produces several hormones -ACTH, growth hormone, LH, FSH, TSH, prolactin.

Defects in these glands can alter the functioning of several hormones and affect normal growth and development of a child.

In severe cases it may be life threatening.

Who gets affected?

Children can bet affected any time from birth onwards. With condition called Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Adrenal insufficiency.
Children who have had Cranial surgery or radiotherapy are also at a risk of developing these hormone deficiencies.

How do you treat them?

These children are tested from the deficiency and need to be started on replacement therapy to help them grow and function normally.

What is Cushing’s syndrome?

An excess of steroid whether given external or produced in the body can lead to severe weight gain, obesity, easy bruising. This condition is not amenable to just diet control and exercise. It needs specific treatment.
